About Knowledge Center

The Knowledge Center, originally known as Kennametal University (KU), recognized the need for educating internal and external customers in the metalworking field.  New workpiece materials, more advanced machine tools, new people entering into the industry, new opportunities being presented to customers and the increasing needs of companies to be more productive to stay competitive, all spurred this initiative.  

Kennametal University was first opened in North America in 1998 and operated under the principle that metalworking is a science and not an art. Using a non-commercial delivery to teach and discuss engineering principles and facts, the program focused on providing participants with the knowledge they needed now and into the future no matter where their career might lead or what manufacturer’s products they plan to use.

In 2003, as Kennametal began to focus on becoming more global, Kennametal University saw the need to do exactly the same opening a location in Bangalore, India. This location has been a great success and served as a model to open locations in Europe (Germany and The United Kingdom) and Brazil.  More locations, such as in the Asia Pacific region, are also being planned for the future. Furthermore, Kennametal University was renamed the Kennametal Knowledge Center promoting this global expansion and continued focus on education.

Since its inception, the Knowledge Center has grown from delivering a few courses per year at Kennametal World Headquarters in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to delivering over forty face-to-face courses per year globally.  In addition to face-to-face courses, the Knowledge Center has successfully launched the Certified Metalcutting Professional online education program.  As the Knowledge Center celebrates its 10-year anniversary, the future looks very promising.  New course offerings and geographical expansion will continue to make the Knowledge Center the global provider of choice for manufacturing related, product and brand independent, technical education.
