Driving Automotive Fuel Efficiencies

Next time you’re driving, think about how Kennametal is driving every aspect of fuel efficiency in automotive production.

Inlet Valves

We dramatically reduced cost-per-part machining with the Kennametal RIQ Quattro Cut inserts for cylinder head production. These four-edged inserts are located on patented high-precision serrations inside the pocket seat. Similar competitive inserts require two setting screws and must be precisely adjusted to each other. Our RIQ inserts need only one screw to maintain a 1-minute of angular accuracy, which saves time and potential adjustment errors.

Another bonus? You get 12 cutting edges from the 4-sided insert because each insert can be indexed four times on each of three-seat angles. The edges not in use are protected in the pocket.

Cylinder Bores

Over the last few decades, the height of engine pistons has been reduced, in part, to lighten car weight. High pressures, high temperatures, short strokes, and higher RPMs, combined with shorter piston heights, increase demands on materials, surfaces, and seals. All of this means cylinder bores must be more cylindrical to prevent uneven combustion pressures in the cylinder head.

Our Romicron precision boring tool with closed loop boring means you can make simple and accurate tool adjustments one click at a time, down to 1µm. With a central dial, you can make adjustments to a single or multiple cutting tips. There’s no clamping screw or unpredictable backlash often found on conventional fineboring systems.

Hole accuracy is critical in turbocharger machining. Popular thinking has been that a drill needs to be precisely symmetrical to drill accurately.

But at Kennametal, we think differently. Conventional symmetrical drills often generate a pendulum effect, and the result is a hole with a “triangular” shape. With the growing popularity of hard-to-machine materials like titanium and nickel-based alloys for automotive components like turbochargers, hole accuracy is becoming more of a challenge.

We welcome that challenge and designed the Y-TECH drill to beat it. The drill’s uneven spacing generates a side force by design, which keeps the drill stable in the hole. No swinging pendulum, no triangular holes. You get straight, round holes.

Better yet, you also get a more reliable drill that produces less scrap material and lasts longer than typical solid carbide drills.
