Mark all as readRomicron™ High Performance Fine Boring System
We're going to look at fine boring applications. Not too long ago, we made diameter adjustments in the machine and eliminated the time-consuming fine adjustment at a presetter with the eBore™ digital display. Today, we're looking at this smart device here: the Romicron closed-loop boring pin. eBore and Romicron both feature a whole accuracy of up to IT6, whole cylindricity of up to 5 microns, and hole position of up to 5 microns. But with Romicron, fine boring applications can be fully automated, which is important for large volume production. And that's what we're going to demonstrate here today.
Manual Adjustment with Romicron
Diameter adjustments with Romicron can be achieved in two ways: manual adjustment and fully automated. We're going through the manual adjustment process first.
For this part we've pre-machined two holes: both holes with a 49.000-millimeter diameter, our goal is to get to a finish diameter of 50.00 millimeters. We're adjusting the tool at the pre-setter first. After that, we're taking the first cut and then measuring again.
We're now at 49.989 millimeters, so we only must adjust it by 10 microns in diameter to get to 50.000 millimeters. Since one click is one micron radially, all we need to do next is rotate the diameter adjustment ring by five clicks. With Romicron, that's simple because each click you can hear, you can see, and you can even feel it. Alright, done. Now we're making the final cut in the second hole.
We are at exactly 50.000 millimeters.
Automated Adjustment with Romicron
Okay, now let's look at the automated adjustment process – called closed loop boring. Same procedure as before, but this time without any manual operator interaction.
We'll measure with a probe, which communicates back the actual diameter to the machine control. The machine control calculates the difference between the actual and the target diameter and calculates the number of required clicks. Now the tool moves to the Romicron closed loop boring pin, which sits on the back of the table and engages with one of the holes in the diameter adjustment ring. The spindle rotates around its own axis, and the calculated adjustment will be applied to the tool. We're moving on and finishing the next hole now.
We're at 49.9996 millimeters. That's less than half a micron less than the target diameter. It's simply incredibly precise, and everything is fully automated. So, mission accomplished.
All right, let me quickly summarize things for you:
eBore and Romicron both cover a large diameter range and work in nearly all materials.
Both systems work extremely precise.
Both systems are simple to operate and are very reliable.
When it comes to large volume production, Romicron is the way to go.
